The project
Given the breadth of the State of Minas Gerais and above all the comprehensive universe of research, we defined as the first stage of this project the survey of periodical publications focused on cinema in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, comprising the time frame from the beginnings (1897) to the 1990s. 1960.
The choice of research around periodical publications takes into account three main criteria: the originality of the initiative; the feasibility of execution; and the organization/availability of primary sources that will serve as a basis for future research.
In relation to originality, we emphasize that most research on cinematographic publications has focused primarily on the Rio-São Paulo axis, failing to include other regions of the country. At the same time, by concentrating research in the field of publications, it becomes possible to establish a broader time frame without forgetting to consider the feasibility of executing the first stage of the project within a period of 24 months.
The research was based on the criterion of the geographical division of the region into two sub-regional centers and two zone centers thus determined: sub-regional centers A, composed of the cities of Manhuaçu, Muriaé, Ponte Nova and Ubá; sub-regional centers B, composed of the cities of Cataguases and Viçosa; zone A centers, made up of the cities of Além Paraíba and Carangola; zone B centers, made up of the cities of Bicas, Leopoldina, Rio Pomba, Santos Dumont, São João Nepomuceno and Visconde do Rio Branco. A representative city was chosen from each of the regions listed.
